Dollars and Calories

Captains Log - Mission Elapsed Time 9 days, 18 hours, 13 minutes and 6 seconds

A full grown bottle of bourbon used to be called "a fifth" because it contained roughly a fifth of a gallon of bourbon.

In metric terms, that comes to about 750 ml, which is how it is sold and bottled today.

A 750 ml bottle contains 25.36 fl oz. of bourbon.

Each oz. of 86 proof bourbon contains approximately 65 calories.

This works out to roughly 1650 calories in every bottle of bourbon.

That's about the same as a double whopper with cheese and an order of salty fries.

This used to be one of my favorite meals

I nice, big juicy steak, baked potato with butta, sour cream and shredded cheese and a stack of buttery crescent rolls. That bourbon I washed it down with? That's the same as eating everything you see on those plates and having a double whopper with cheese and fries on the side, just to go with.

Insane! By not drinking I've just cut anywhere from 1650 to 2000 calories from my daily consumption.

Oh, and let's not forget the expense.

That 750 ml bottle of bourbon would run anywhere from $10 to $25, depending on the brand. I drank one every fucking night.

That's somewhere between $300 to $750 a month back in my pocket.

I'm going to lose weight and make money doing it.

It just doesn't get any better than that.

Until next time this is Rocky Jones, Sobernaut, signing off.

"figured out a way of spending all that extra money yet?"

YEP! Cocaine and hookers!! LOL!

Or possibly the daughters braces and eighth grade field trip to Washington, D.C.

Haven't really decided yet.

Hello, there...:) New to your blog, and I just loved your post.

When I first got sober, instead of enjoying alcohol, I replaced my addiction with my infamous Dove Ice Cream Bars and nearly lost my mind when I noticed that I dropped 20lbs without ANY effort. It's amazing how many calories you consume while drinking and the disregard you have for the rest of your health.

I hope you don't mind that I'm going to add you to my blog roll. :)

Found your blog through shadow and enjoyed your writing. And could relate to your experience. I'm almost 3 months in now. Hope you're still sober. If you are, more power to you and come back and write. If not and you still want to be sober, come back and write too. I felt like you did for many many years and tried to quit on my own. I felt that my drinking was a moral issue. For the first time I tried AA with an open mind and for me its working. That's not to say that its the only way but its the only way for me. You can do it but you don't have to do it alone.

Greetings Sobernaut
Are you a PHARISEE? Is the BIG BOOK the word of God? You are not an alcoholic, but a sinner - just like me. Jesus Christ died on a cross for your sins - not Bill Wilson. AA is the work of Satan - you have been deluded, like millions of other STEPPERS. The only way to SALVATION is through Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I, Micky, am a gift to all people!!
GOSPEL:
Lk 12:1-7
At that time:
So many people were crowding together
that they were trampling one another underfoot.
Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples,
“Beware of the leaven–that is, the hypocrisy–of the Pharisees.
“There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed,
nor secret that will not be known.
Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness
will be heard in the light,
and what you have whispered behind closed doors
will be proclaimed on the housetops.
I tell you, my friends,
do not be afraid of those who kill the body
but after that can do no more.
I shall show you whom to fear.
Be afraid of the one who after killing
has the power to cast into Gehenna;
yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one.
Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins?
Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God.
Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
Do not be afraid.
You are worth more than many sparrows.”

Wow; if I only knew my problem wasn't drugs and alcohol, but merely my sins!
If only I had prayed correctly, my depression would have been relieved!

Micky's Comments:
Dear Johnny
You drink to medicate your fear, pain and shame (sins). You have "stuff" from your childhood you need to process. Did your father abuse you? I can see quite a lot of pain (photo) in your face. I have done the work, Jack. I have been redeemed, Johnny. Deleting my comments is not going to help you deal with your TERROR. I speak the truth - the other 12 Step BLOGGERS wouldn't have the "balls", to. You don't get it, do you John? I AM JUST AN INSTRUMENT GOD USES TO TELL OTHERS ABOUT HIS SON, JESUS CHRIST, WHO DIED ON A CROSS FOR MANKIND'S SIN. The choice is yours, John? At the end of the day, Jack, your process is not up to me - but up to God. I LOVE you, JOHN!!

It's been over a year since you've blogged and I wonder how you're doing. I didn't have trouble quitting, I had trouble staying quit. AA helped me with that. I couldn't stay quit before without it. Good luck to you!!!
